Laughter in Group Therapy
Group therapy methods have quickly grown to become one of the most widely used means of tackling mental health concerns as well as those associated with a person’s difficulties in associating socially. Group counseling sessions for seniors, for those facing illnesses, for various types of professionals, for youths and students, for people who are trying to adjust to the aftermath of traumatic episodes, and for many other types of people and particular concerns are helping to cleanse the stigma of psychotherapy in the general population and are providing efficient care to so many people.
There are many essential assets created by the organization and nature of group therapy, such as being able to listen to others in similar encounters and to discover new perspectives, but some assets are less overt than others.
However, one of the best benefits of group therapy sessions is its ability to trigger laughter amongst the group members. Laughter, though often underrated as a quick or simply lighthearted means of feeling a bit better, can often have a very big impact on emotions and general outlook, and the act of laughing can sometimes result in long term positive effects for those who are going through a broad range of mental health troubles.
Though laughing can certainly take place within the normal private counseling setting, group counseling is often able to help bring out instances for laughter by encouraging sharing and a friendly atmosphere of exchange.
Since laughter is generally found to be infectious, members of a group therapy may find themselves unable to escape from the temptation of joining their therapy group partners in a happy chuckle, whether it’s from a funny joke or an unexpected moment of humor. Therapy in general and in its more specific forms has often been assumed to be an especially serious endeavor, and clients tend to usually expect to encounter emotional periods or soul-searching than bouts of happy laughing.
But the exact method of group therapy is very conducive to feeling free to laugh with one’s peers, even when people are experiencing the most difficult health challenges.
