Devil May Cry 3
Devil May Cry 3, is the second sequel to the popular video game. Capcom released it in 2005 after the first sequel had bombed. Let’s take a closer look at this video game.
Capcom wanted to cash in on a successful game. The sequel wasn’t so popular. The franchise was reset with Devil May Cry 3, returning to its roots. That means more fighting, and a generally harder game. The game sold 1.3 million units around the world. It also earned a lot of money. Game Informer called it one of the top video games of 2005. It had one of the best fight systems in the video game world. People could play it on a console or PC.
A hero, Dante, battles some demons his brother Vergil sends against him. When Dante defeats these creatures, a giant tower erupts out of the ground near his shop. He senses his brother somewhere in the tower. As he fights his way through the dead bosses become weapons. The weapons help him battle through the following level.
But in the course of fighting through the tower and battling his brother, Dante learns that a man named Arkham is manipulating them in order to reactivate the tower, steal a powerful sword from the demon world, and use it to rule over the earth. Dante and Vergil eventually defeat the Arkham, then fight over the powerful sword, called the Force Edge. Dante wins the sword, and his brother chooses to stay behind in the demon world.
The plot is thin, but it drives the action from level to level and boss to boss. In general the levels become more difficult. In the original game, made for Japan, hard was the highest level. Capcom decided to make that the medium level for North America, called normal. That meant that the hard mode in North America was even more difficult, considered by many to be too hard. People who liked the game still disliked this nearly impossible play level.
It’s very hard to please the gaming public. The first sequel had been criticized for being too easy. Capcom adjusted by increasing the difficulty of Devil May Cry 3 only to have that one criticized for being too difficult. Sometimes it’s to the point that if a video game creator could walk on water people would complain that he doesn’t know how to swim.
Devil May Cry 3 is old news now, but it was a big deal in its day.
